Iontophoresis steroid treatment side effects

Iontophoresis is an effective and well tolerated method for delivering ionized medications through the dermis using a controlled amount of electrical current. This mode of treatment offers benefits to a wide array of musculoskeletal disorders. In physical therapy, the use of dexamethasone for inflammation and acetic acid for calcific deposits has been used for many years in numerous clinical settings. Iontophoresis, in conjunction with other conservative therapies and interventions, has been shown to effectively manage painful symptoms associated with superficial tissue structures in a wide variety of patients.

An UpToDate review on “Overview of geriatric rehabilitation: Program components and settings for rehabilitation” (Hoenig and Kortebein, 2014) states that “Iontophoresis/Phonophoresis -- These modalities utilize electric current (iontophoresis) or ultrasound energy (phonophoresis) to force a therapeutic medication (., glucocorticoid) into tissues.  Both are used to treat soft tissue musculoskeletal injuries.  Although evidence is limited, the few randomized controlled trials indicate that these modalities are generally no more effective than placebo”.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated some early promising results for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Jastifer et al reported on a study of 30 patients who received LLLT and completed 12 months of follow-up. [ 46 ] Patients were treated twice a week for 3 weeks for a total of six treatments. Patients demonstrated a mean improvement in heel pain VAS from of 100 at baseline to of 100 at the 12-month follow-up period. Total FFI score improved from a mean of at baseline to at 12 months post procedure.
